Earn money tutoring university students in modules you did well in
Apply NowApplication deadline: 6 February 2026
Please read this entire page before applying. It contains important information about requirements, expectations, and how everything works.
Swift Tuition provides tutoring for both high school and university students across South Africa. We're focused on building a solid community of tutors who can help students succeed in their modules.
This application is specifically for university module tutors.
Our primary focus is on the University of Pretoria and Stellenbosch University, but we welcome tutors from other institutions too.
We're looking for tutors who can explain concepts clearly - not just those who got the highest marks. If you understand a module well enough to teach it, we want to hear from you.
Selection is based on teaching ability, not just marks
You need at least 70% in the module you want to tutor. 75%+ is preferred, and distinctions are prioritised - but this isn't the only factor.
We weight teaching ability more heavily than raw marks. A tutor with 72% who explains at an 85% level beats someone with 90% who explains at 70%.
Primary focus: University of Pretoria and Stellenbosch University. But tutors from other universities are welcome to apply.
You don't need to be perfect from day one. You just need to be good at transferring knowledge clearly to students. If you can explain concepts in a way that makes sense, that's what we're after.
Here's what you need to submit
We can only move forward with your application if there is a dedicated module group (e.g. WhatsApp group) for the module you want to tutor - preferably from 2026, or 2025 at the latest. This must be an official university group, not a group created by competing tutors. You need to be able to get access to this group (we'll figure this out together during the two-week period). This is where we advertise the tutoring services to students.
Upload an unlisted YouTube video showing a screen recording of your marks from your university portal.
For each module you want to tutor, provide:
Checkbox confirming the mark shown is accurate and unedited.
Length: 5-15 minutes (up to 20 min if you have more to show)
Content: Explain your chosen topic as if teaching a student
Upload: YouTube as an unlisted video
Format preference:
Application Deadline: 6 February 2026
We review videos daily. The sooner you submit, the sooner you'll hear back if we're impressed. If you submit on the 6th, expect a response on the 7th.
Timeline: Tutors may be accepted from as early as 31 January. Onboarding will be available from 1 February.

100% percentage-based - you earn when Swift Tuition earns
| Students in Module Group | Your Share | Swift Tuition |
|---|---|---|
| Fewer than 150 students | 70% | 30% |
| 150 or more students | 50% | 50% |
If the group crosses 150 students later in the semester, we'll adjust accordingly.
The ~2 weeks of free tuition at the start of each semester serves two purposes:
If interest is too low: If there aren't enough students interested by the end of the two-week period, we won't be able to justify running the course. In that case, students will be refunded, and you'll be paid R500 for your time.
Transparency: Swift Tuition will NOT artificially inflate group numbers. A maximum of 3-4 Swift Tuition associated numbers may be in any group, but no more.
First payment: 2 weeks after the 9th. Thereafter: weekly (every weekend).
Track exactly how much you've earned and how much you're owed.
With ~50 students: R8,000-R12,000 per semester minimum. More students = more earnings.
R350 → R400 → R500 → R600. Occasional 10-50% discounts during busy periods.
No flat fees. The percentage-based model means your earnings scale with value delivered. One tutor has had up to 120 students in a single module.
We use Paystack as our payment gateway, which typically pays out within 1-2 business days.
Weekly payments (weekends): Each payment covers funds from the previous week's Friday to that week's Wednesday.
Note: Allow for slight delays of 1-2 days around public holidays.
Our goal: We aim to maintain enough rolling cash to pay you for funds made from the previous week's Saturday to the current week's Friday, even if the money hasn't yet reflected in Swift Tuition's bank account.
Do I need a drawing tablet to apply?
No. If your explanation video is good, that's what matters. But for diagram-heavy modules (maths, physics, engineering), a tablet with a stylus is preferred for ongoing tutoring.
Reimbursement Programme
Once Swift Tuition generates enough revenue from your module, we'll purchase a tablet and ship it to your nearest PostNet for collection.
Example: If a course costs R400 and we make 4 sales (R800 to Swift Tuition after split), that's enough to cover a tablet.
Can't afford one upfront?
Let us know - we can potentially cover it earlier. But you must still demonstrate good tutoring ability without it (whiteboard, tablet with fingers, etc.).
We don't expect you to go above and beyond. Swift Tuition is our project, not yours.
The percentage-based model is there to motivate you, not pressure you.
That said, students do notice when tutors put in extra effort, and it pays off.
At the start of each semester, we offer around 2 weeks of free tuition, along with discounts for early joiners and occasional free sessions, notes, and resources throughout the term.
Why? This is your first impression - give it your all. Students who experience quality free content are more likely to join the premium offering.
What to share: Past papers, tutorials, notes - anything you have access to. These will be uploaded to the website to attract students.
Swift Tuition is a community first, courses second.
The goal is to create a space where students can get proper support throughout their modules, not only before exams.
As a tutor, you're part of that. The better the community, the more students stick around, and the more you earn.
Can I do private tutoring?
Yes. You're welcome to take students on for 1-on-1 sessions if they DM you. Charge whatever you like.
Note: Swift Tuition is not liable for independent arrangements.
Using the Platform
A native booking system is available on the platform. If you use it, let us know so we can track your share. Your cut: 80% of 1-on-1 sales through the platform.
A custom booking system is in development (expected early April) for better tracking.
The goal is to tutor so well in group sessions that students don't need 1-on-1s. But the option is there if you want it.
